Captain  Purnell enlisted into the Army in 1997 as a member of the Adjutant General Corps. After completion of Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, he was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division in Fort Drum, New York as an Operations Specialist for Headquarters, Headquarters Battery Field Artillery. In 2000, he was assigned to the 1/175th Infantry Maryland National Guard as an Operations Specialist. In 2003, he was assigned to the Headquarters Joint Forces Area Command, 29th Division, and Maryland National Guard as a Human Resource Sergeant. He was commissioned in the Quartermaster Corps in 2010 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps. 

Captain Purnell currently serves as the Operations and Plans Staff Officer for the 311th ESC (Expeditionary Sustainment Command)  located in Los Angeles, California,  responsible for unit planning and movement. 
 His previous assignments include:
  • Company Commander for the 311th (MA) Mortuary Company, located in Aguadilla Puerto Rico.
  • Operations and Plans Staff Officer for 313th Movement Control Battalion,  located in Baltimore, Maryland.
  • Liaison Officer for the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Energy Middle East Division,  in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, located in Afghanistan.
  • Headquarters Company Commander, 165th Quartermaster Petroleum Group, Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
  • Supply and Services Officer, Headquarters Division, 1st Army Division East at Fort Meade, Maryland.
  • 1229th Transportation Company, Maryland National Guard as an ROTC Cadet serving in the capacity of a Platoon Leader for the HHC Platoon.
